Our First Beehive Inspection

One week as flown past, and on Sunday we did our very first hive inspection!! It was an incredible experience, and here's a bit about it...

First, we decided to use the smoker for experience, and also for safety. It took us awhile to get it going good, but it was fun!

(cough) Well, we REALLY got it going good at one point - well, just a little tooo good, we were getting all smoked out! :-D

We have 3 whole bee suits, which give us a great feeling of being invincible! (grins) Daddy, Caleb and I each had a suit on. (and it was really difficult for me to take pictures through my veil!! :-)

In the first hive we inspected, we discovered that the queen had not yet made her way out of the cage she was in, so we released the queen, out of curiosity explored around, removed any burr comb that we found, and closed the hive back up.

In the second hive we were glad to see that the queen was free, and that the hive was doing well. As we inspected the frames we found some honey comb, even some pollen, and after quite some time we even spotted some eggs! Caleb was the first to find them, but the rest of us took longer to really see. What was really amazing was that we were able to see the queen - incredible.

Burr comb and the queen's cage.

Inspecting the frames... it was so interesting!!

And another fun job completed... we hope we did everything right - and were beekeepers instead of beehavers! ;-)
